ConSenso
IoT technology, carbon analysis and best practices for a more conscious and sustainable coffee cultivation
Introducing the ConSenso Project
ConSenso is an agricultural innovation project developed by Accademia del Caffè Espresso, PNAT and Cisco, that combines technology and sustainability to enable the remote monitoring of a coffee plantation in Mbeya, Tanzania, at the Utengule Coffee estate. The project aims to both improve agronomic practices managining the avalibale resources in coffee cultivation and raise consumer awareness about coffee origins and supply chains.
It is based on two main actions:
- the development of IoT sensors specifically designed for coffee plants;
- the calculation and visualization of carbon sequestration in the plantation.
IoT Sensors for Coffee: Real-Time Monitoring
The innovative sensors developed within ConSenso allow for the continuous monitoring of the internal parameters of coffee plants, including:
- electrical properties;
- plant health indicators;
- responses to water stress or environmental changes.
This IoT-based agricultural system enables precise and consistent data collection, building a comprehensive database to optimize irrigation, fertilization, and pest management activities.

Interactive Interface: Accessible, Transparent Data
To ensure clear and accessible communication, an interactive interface has been developed. This dashboard provides real-time visualization of environmental conditions and plant health data.
CO₂ Sequestration and Regenerative Agriculture
A key component of the project involves measuring the amount of CO₂ sequestered by the plantation. Thanks to the integration of shade trees within the agroforestry system, this coffee farm can absorb more CO₂ than conventional systems.
This practice:
- contributes to climate change mitigation;
- promotes sustainable farming methods;
- highlights the potential of agroforestry coffee cultivation as a climate solution, in a productive forest context
