Chapter 1
From seed to species, discovering the living origins behind every cup.

Every espresso begins long before the grinding or tamping; it begins with a seed.
Coffee starts its life as the fruit of a tree grown between the Tropic of Cancer and Capricorn, in what is called the “Coffee Belt”, and passes through flowering, harvest, processing, shipping, and roasting before finally being extracted.
Each of these stages leaves its fingerprint on flavor, and understanding the whole journey is what separates drinking coffee from tasting it with consciousness.
At the center of that journey lies a fundamental characteristic: the plant’s species and variety. Most of the coffee available in the world traces its identity back to one of two species, Arabica or Robusta, each shaped by different altitudes, microclimates, and genetics, bringing something quite distinctive to the cup.
Within Arabica, some varieties outshine the others; Geisha, in particular, has refined what specialty coffee can taste and cost, while Robusta itself is being revalued thanks to new processing techniques.
In this first Coffee Facts chapter, we will unpack these topics one at a time: what “seed to cup” really means, how Arabica and Robusta are different, why Geisha gains so much attention in the coffee industry, and what’s changing the reputation of Robusta today.
Together, they will help you better explore the next chapter that will follow.
Next chapter: From Farm to Bean, how climate, processing, and roast style shape everything.
